well, i really did it! i had my first photography show and i made it through the evening without breaking out into hives.

it was a very successful night all around. i even sold one piece! yay!
courtney featured locally grown food for the reception – which was awesome!
BFD did great and sold lots of things during the opening reception. i’m so happy for them!
congrats tim and courtney. i think this is going to be your year!

my first ever attempt at showing and selling my photography (and john’s photography too!) will happen this saturday.
our friends courtney and tim are having their official opening reception of their new shop brew ferment distill (BFD) on second saturday, so our photography will be hanging on their wall. i’m nervous and excited all at once. i have to drop off the work this week to hang on the walls and make gallery tags and hopefully my business cards come in time as well!
best of luck to my wonderful friends on their new store and here’s to seeing if i can do this for more than just a hobby!
yesterday was father’s day. we took john out to one of his favorite places…lucky cafe (it’s total greasy spoon and soooo yummy!) of course, i forgot my camera. but, after breakfast, we headed back home to get our camera gear together and head out to a place we’d never been to. i love those spur of the moment road trips.
the destination?…mare island. this is a former naval shipyard – in fact, mare island was the nation’s first naval shipyard on the west coast, established in 1854 and ultimately closed in 1996. that’s your history lesson for the day!
it’s a photographers’ dream. in fact, the few people we saw meandering around there had cameras in their hands as well. so many great buildings and bold colors and peeling paint (my favorite!). here’s a little glimpse into our day…
anya was a good model this day. very cooperative!
stella on the other hand would give me about 3 seconds and then run up to ask to see her picture. she loves looking at the photos right after they are taken. she’s so my kid!
i just love the colors there. it’s very inspiring!
these barrels might have been my favorite.
and some photos with daddy
it was a great day. mare island is in vallejo, ca. if you live nearby or are visiting the area, i highly recommend it. there are tons of areas that are off limits, but there’s plenty that isn’t and you will have a blast snapping away – it’s one of my new favorite places to take photos now!

this weeks photo challenge at iheartfaces is “excited”. i think that is the perfect word to describe anya on this ride. it was at the san ramon kite and wind festival and they had little kiddie rides set up. it was the first time she’d ever been on a ride by herself (that wasn’t a merry-go-round.) this was her expression as this little airplane started going up in the air.

this is kind of a late post, but i was playing with photoshop today and working on some pictures i took at the fair back in early september (i know, i said it was late!)
so, just for kicks, i thought i’d post a little before and after of one of my favorite photos of the day. i thought this ride was beautiful! the colors were gorgeous against the blue sky. of course, i figured we could make things pop a bit more with minimal work.
here’s the before:
and here’s the after:
here’s a breakdown of what i did:
- adjust levels
- select color in sky
- adjust hue/saturation
- increase saturation
- decrease light
- add more blue hue
- layer overlay with opacity at 53%
and there you have it! the pop of color i was looking for! enjoy and leave a comment to tell me what you think!
it’s a new challenge at iheartfaces this week. the theme is “contemplative”. i just love this photo for a couple reasons.
it was a total mistake that it came out. i had the ISO set to 1600 for some indoor photos i was taking, and forgot to check the settings on the camera before snapping away at the park the next day. i wanted to cry when i realized what i had done (the kids were really cooperating and letting me take loads of photos.) this was the only photo i was able to salvage. a little work in photoshop on the levels and this is what i ended up with. i couldn’t be happier. i just love stella’s expression. she looks like she’s in deep thought. in my humble opinion, it’s a beautiful mistake!
i heard these phrases so many times…
“they grow up so fast!”
“cherish this time because before you know it, they’re all grown up!”
“it goes by too fast!”
wasn’t she just this little a few months ago?
has it really been 2 years?!
and here i am all melancholy about my little baby turning two years old on saturday.
she did grow up so fast. yet she’s still such a little peanut. it’s hard for me to believe she’s two.
happy birthday, sweet stella grace!
this week at iheartfaces, the challenge is all about bubbles.
anya quickly realized what happens when you try to blow bubbles on a very windy day at the beach.
